Photoshoot Safety Beyond the Plus One: Staying Safe in Central Florida’s Heat, Wildlife, and Weather

As a female photographer in Central Florida, I have learned that safety on a photoshoot goes far beyond bringing a plus one. While having someone with you is important, our environment here in Florida comes with its own set of challenges. The heat can be overwhelming, the wildlife is beautiful but sometimes dangerous, and the weather can change in a heartbeat.

If you are planning an outdoor photoshoot in Central Florida, here are my top tips for staying safe, comfortable, and focused on creating gorgeous images.

1. Beat the Heat Before It Beats You

Florida’s sunshine may be dreamy for golden hour portraits, but heat exhaustion and dehydration are very real risks, especially during the summer.

  • Schedule smart: Early mornings and late afternoons are cooler and more comfortable, in addition to providing better light.
  • Hydrate ahead of time: Do not just bring water. Begin hydrating the day before your shoot!
  • Dress strategically: Light, breathable fabrics in lighter colors can help keep your core temperature down. If you’re dressing in heavier fabrics, remember to take breaks!
  • Take breaks: Step into shade whenever possible to cool down.

2. Respect Our Wildlife

From curious alligators near lakes to protective birds guarding nests, Central Florida’s natural beauty comes with a wild side.

  • Know your location: Research the area for potential wildlife hazards before you arrive.
  • Keep a safe distance: Telephoto lenses allow you to capture nature without getting too close.
  • Stay aware: Listen for rustling, bird calls, or splashes. Wildlife may be closer than you think.
  • No feeding: Feeding wildlife is unsafe and in many cases it is also illegal.

3. Plan for Unpredictable Weather

Central Florida is famous for sudden rain showers and lightning storms, especially in the afternoons.

  • Check the radar: Do not just look at the forecast. Watch the real-time radar before and during your shoot.
  • Pack for rain: Bring camera covers, quick-dry towels, and a large umbrella.
  • Know your exit plan: If you are far from your car, identify the closest safe shelter.

4. Safety Equals Better Creativity

When you prepare for the heat, respect wildlife, and stay weather-aware, you protect yourself and create the conditions for a relaxed, confident, and inspired photoshoot. What’s in My Brevite Camera Bag: Orlando Photographer Edition

As a photographer working in and around Orlando, I rely on gear that is reliable, compact, and efficient. My Brevite camera bag is designed to carry everything I need for on-location shoots, whether I’m photographing portraits in Baldwin Park or capturing content downtown. Here’s a breakdown of what I keep in my bag and why.

Camera Body

Canon EOS R
This mirrorless camera is the core of my setup. It delivers sharp image quality, handles low light well, and is light enough for long shooting days. It pairs easily with my lenses and keeps my workflow simple and fast.

Lenses

24-70mm f/2.8
My primary lens. The focal range covers everything from wide shots to tighter portraits. It’s sharp, quick to focus, and reliable for almost every kind of session.

70-200mm f/2.8
This lens stays in the bag more than it gets used. It is great for compression and distance shots, but the size and weight make it less practical for most of my current work.

Lighting and Power

External Flash
I bring a small flash for fill light in indoor sessions where a stand may not be appropriate. It adds just enough control without slowing down my pace.

AA Batteries
Stored in a zip bag. I keep two sets for the flash and replace them regularly.

Storage

SD Card & Battery Case
A compact, waterproof case holds several SD cards and camera batteries. I always carry a few extra in case of serious gear breakdown.

Accessories

Microfiber Towel
Used for cleaning lenses, wiping down gear, or drying benches during unpredictable Florida weather.

Pens and Scissors
Useful for note-taking, marking items, or quick wardrobe fixes on location.

Emergency Kit
A small pouch with:

  • Hair ties and bobby pins for clients
  • Bandaids for small scrapes or blisters
  • Alcohol wipes for general use

Any Downsides?

I choose a light blue originally and through many sweaty summers, holi festivals, and sandy beaches, it is definetly not its original color anymore. I don’t regret this choice though as it washes well!

Why so minimal?

This setup keeps my gear minimal but effective. The Brevite bag makes it easy to move between sessions across Orlando without sacrificing functionality. Every item has a purpose, and over time, I’ve refined it to only carry what I truly need for digital photography.
